The Entry-Jerusalem Church is located in the western part of the former settlement of Suzdal, between the fortifications of the Kremlin and the Market Square.

Short story

In the 17th century, a wooden Pyatnitskaya church stood on the site of the now existing church. In 1702-1707 the wooden church was replaced by a stone one, consecrated in honor of the Christian feast of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospel, on the eve of the Entry into Jerusalem, Jesus Christ manifested divine power by resurrecting his friend Lazarus, who lay in a tomb for four days. Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, where he is solemnly greeted by thousands of people who knew about the miracle of the resurrection.

People took off their clothes, paved the way for the Savior, others carried palm branches in their hands and threw them on the road, exclaiming: "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" Entering Jerusalem means the recognition of Jesus Christ as the Messiah, sent by God for the salvation of mankind. IN Of Russia this holiday is also called Palm Sunday. Believers go to church with willow branches, which, replacing the palm tree, symbolizes faith on the Lord's Sunday, the triumph of life over death.

The architectural ensemble of the Entry-Jerusalem Church

The Entry-Jerusalem Church in Suzdal has survived to this day with changes and losses. In 1772, the existing winter temple of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was added to it, thus creating an ensemble of "paired" churches... The tent-roofed bell tower, which stood between the churches, was dismantled in 1939. The complex of the Pyatnitskaya and Entry-Jerusalem Churches was surrounded by a stone fence with the Holy Gates, completed with a vault in the form of a cross-shaped barrel, decorated with the panel "Entrance to Jerusalem".

The gate and fence collapsed in the 1930s. The basis of the Church of Entry into Jerusalem is a cuboid volume, to which a semicircle of an apse adjoins on the east side. The four-pitched roof of the temple is completed with five chapters, restored during reconstruction in the 1990s. The upper part of the facade along the entire perimeter is bordered by a decorative cornice made of kokoshniks, placed on small consoles. The smooth walls are decorated with carved window frames. From the west, north and south, the building is decorated with perspective portals that serve as entrances to the church.
