The Dendrological Garden of Pereslavl-Zalessky is one of the bright "green" attractions of the Yaroslavl region. This is a beautiful corner of nature created by human hands, where shrubs and trees from all over the world are collected - more than 600 species in total. The garden has existed for more than half a century and today it covers an area of 58 hectares. It is set up on a picturesque hill, from which Lake Pleshcheyevo and city quarters can be seen far away.
History of the botanical collection
The initiative to create the garden belongs to the remarkable forester Sergei Fedorovich Kharitonov (1897-1992). It was thanks to his diligence and his experiments on the introduction of plants that the experimental plot began to develop in 1952. Its area gradually increased, an orchard was laid, and after 10 years, already on 20 hectares, larch and cedar, European spruce and Amur velvet grew.
The staff of the dendrological garden not only planted and looked after plants. They changed the local landscape. On the former ravine, a cascade of ponds was built, between which stone bridges were built. For ease of movement, some of the paths were asphalted.
A lot of work bore fruit, and in 1976 the garden area was expanded to 25 hectares. More than 150 species of shrubs and trees from all climatic zones of the former USSR and from foreign countries grew in it.
New areas were developed with the expectation that the entire territory of the dendrological garden would be decorated in a landscape style. The hand-planted and human-nurtured plants had to look like they grew naturally. Neighboring plots were tried to be planted so that they were in harmony with each other in color and shape, creating the impression of a single, lively green space. The road and path network was laid according to the same principle. Today the garden, which was named after its founder, is part of the Pleshcheyevo Lake National Park.
Experimental work and nursery
The Dendrological Garden in Pereslavl-Zalessky is of great scientific interest. He grew up thanks to the introduction of S.F. Kharitonov. That is, the first forestry experiments carried out on its territory were attempts to acclimatize plants brought from other regions and natural zones on Pereslavl land.
Now there are several sites for experimental work, where specialists from large scientific institutions of the country work, for example, the All-Russian Institute of Medicinal and Flavored Plants and the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Specially for the needs of local residents, a nursery for fruit and berry crops has been created on 2 hectares of the garden, where everyone can buy the necessary plants. In the spring, usually from mid-April, here you can buy seedlings of deciduous and coniferous trees and shrubs - maple, viburnum, mountain ash, honeysuckle, deer, lilac, bird cherry, chubushnik, spruce, fir, etc. Varietal apple and pear trees are in great demand among Pereslavl gardeners. currants, gooseberries, raspberries and sea buckthorn. And for reproduction, more than 20 thousand plants are constantly grown in the nursery.
What can be seen in the Dendrological Garden in Pereslavl-Zalessky
Trees and shrubs of the Pereslavl garden are planted in eight zones, each of which contains representatives of the flora of a particular geographic region. Plants are transplanted here at 3-5 years of age. Walking through the garden, you can “visit” North America, the Crimea and the Caucasus, the Far East, Japan, China, Siberia, Eastern and Western Europe, as well as Central Asia.
It is very interesting to walk in the garden with guides. They tell fascinating stories about each collection and tell many interesting facts from the life of plants, as well as legends about the local "inhabitants". BUT for children on the territory there is a whole interactive route "The Path of Fairy Tales".
There are carved wooden sculptures of fairy-tale heroes and animals, and even a hut on chicken legs with Baba Yaga. A beautiful wooden playground with swings, slides and small houses has also been built in the park for children's leisure.
It is good to walk in the garden. But, if you wish, you can also rent bicycles. Then the journey along the garden paths can be combined with an active bike ride. It's nice that the territory of the arboretum is very clean and well-groomed.
Inspection of the exposition usually begins with a collection site, where plants from North America and the Ussuri taiga are mainly planted. They look very nice along the well-equipped cascade of ponds. Here, for example, you can see the Ussuri pear, reaching a height of 10-15 m. In spring it blooms very beautifully, and at the end of summer it bears small sour and tart fruits. In the thickets of the collection site, it is also easy to find Manchurian walnut and aralia, as well as lemongrass and Amur velvet.
Visitors always like the part of the garden given over to the flora of Siberia. On a hot day, beautiful conifers of cedar and cedar pine, Siberian spruce and larch fill the air with a wonderful aroma and cover the guests of the arboretum with shady crowns.
The garden is especially beautiful in spring, during the flowering period. At this time, every corner of it smells of different aromas. And the bees from the local apiary work tirelessly over the flowering shrubs and trees. So, visiting this natural open-air museum, especially with children, is a must.
